“Dreams without goals are just dreams, and they ultimately fuel disappointment”
- Denzel Washington
I've been told a couple of times now that dreaming is something you do when you're young and as you get older you let them go as the reality of life sets in. Personally, I disagree but nevertheless, this poses an interesting question - why is it the older we get the more open we are to forgetting about our dreams and accepting our life situation?
To answer this question we need to start by looking at the life cycle of dreams.
Life of Dreams
Dreams are born in our imagination and creativity which are like any other part of us, if we nurture them, over time they grow stronger. If we ignore them, then they slowly being to shrivel and wither.
Death of Dreams
Dreams are either brought to life (action) or left to die (inaction). Even the best intention in the world without action will prove fruitless.
Age & Desire
The connection between age and desire to manifest dreams lies in what Denzel was saying - dreams without goals ultimately fuel disappointment. So if we spend our lives dreaming without acting then we've accumulated years of disappointment which is why so many years later those who don't act are more than happy to let their dreams die - no more suffering or feeling guilty for not acting on inner desires.
Dreams & Goals
Dream big but have bigger goals. Goals are the steps you take to manifest dreams. Whatever your dreams are ask yourself, are they worth fighting for? If the answer is yes then start watering them. Don't get psyched out by the big picture, just take baby steps. They say if you don't fail you're not even trying so expect knockbacks along the way. Stay consistent and persistent and it will happen. As our good friend Denzel once said "If you hang around the barbershop long enough, sooner or later, you are going to get a haircut".
We don't know how things unfold but if we never try we'll never know. What motivates me is never wanting to look back in years from now and wonder what if...
